Roof Top Tent Loader
I have been working on this idea since last summer and I was finally able to get it out and play around with it. All of you with RTT's know the difficulties of loading it especially if you do not have any help. After many other trial and errors I came up with this design. I wanted something I could break down and store in my garage and something that would be effortless (so no pulleys). This breaks down in to 3 sections and I can store it all in my garage off to the side and not take up much room
I basically roll the vertical/horizontal post out to my driveway on top of the bottom piece. The post holder is held on by lag bolts to attach to the bottom piece. I then tip it on its back and slide the vertical post in to the post holder. I then lift the post up and sort of walk it up slowly so it stands up (wheels locked) but does not go crashing down. Then I will put the tent on the bottom piece, raise it up and roll it under my car, lower it down and wa-la. Reverse steps to be done
The bottom piece is 2 x 5' long 4x4s with 3 x 2x8s that are 3’ wide so it can fit between my tires under the car
The vertical post is a 10' 4x4 cut down about 8" adjusting for the height of the bottom piece. overall height of the whole thing is 128" and I need ever single one of those inches.
The horizontal top piece is 6' long 4x4 (I will trim it down some) with an electric host in the middle and variety of scrap wood holding it in place
The post holder is a variety of scrap parts. Due to the warpness of the wood I made it just over 4" and jam a piece in there to firm it up. I also added an angle 14" 2x4 for rigidity. It is then mounted to a 2x12 which is then lag bolted to the bottom piece to break down easier
The weak point is the post holder to the bottom piece. I have an idea of how to correct this and will try to get parts this week. Right now it is using lag bolts I had laying around, I will get longer bolts with bigger washers. I will also add one more 2x8 under so its all wedged together and this should firm it all up and strengthen it
