Rain Man Phone Booth Scene

Filming Location for the Phone Booth Scene in the Movie Rain Man

One of my favorite movies is Rain Man with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. While in Oklahoma I had remembered some of the scenes were filmed there. One of those scenes being the phone booth scene filmed in Cogar, about 30 miles west of Oklahoma City. The scene has Tom Cruise and Dustin stop off in a phone booth at a random gas station so that Tom could call back and check on his cars. Both of them were locked in the phone booth doing the scene when Dustin Hoffman’s character passes gas. This was completely improvised but being the great actors they are they improvised the whole scene. This ended up making it in the final cut of the movie and Dustin Hoffman to this day says it was one of his favorite times being an actor, farting on Tom Cruise

The phone booth itself no longer exists but the gas station stands mostly as it did in the 1988 movie. The cell phone service wasn’t very good out here but I tried my best off of memory to get a picture matching mostly the same from the start of the scene.

The other filming locations in Oklahoma that we unfortunately did not make it to

  • Guthrie - The doctor office scene.

    • We had passed through this city and totally spaced. It is located and the corner of Oklahoma Street and Division Street. I believe it still exists

  • El Reno - The hotel they stay during the rain.

    • It is disguised as Amarillo Texas in the movie but was shot here. It has since been demolished

  • Hinton - Where Raymond gets to watch Judge Wapner

    • This is a farmhouse location we chose not to try and find
